As a company, we are aware of our responsibility toward the environment and society, and have also anchored this in our corporate philosophy. We act sustainably in realising and organising trade fairs, events and conferences. For us, this is an ongoing process that we must and will continuously work on.
EDUCATION IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:
We place special focus on education in sustainable development. FAIR FRIENDS is an important learning and education place for the subject of sustainability and offers our visitors an exciting programme with lectures, workshops, participatory events, and interactive exhibitions.
For this reason, FAIR FRIENDS has been officially awarded the title of “Competence partner of RCE-Ruhr” and is the first trade fair in the world to receive this certification sponsored by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability in Tokyo.
CO2 COMPENSATION:
FAIR FRIENDS is an eco-friendly event. As Organiser of the trade fair, Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe GmbH supports energy projects of Klima-Kollekte (carbon offsetting fund). In developing and newly industrialised countries around 100 tons of CO2 are offset and the sustainable development of the local population is promoted at the same time.
TRADE FAIR BUILD-UP:
For the special floor spaces (e.g. stages and seating areas) at FAIR FRIENDS, we install Euro-pallets that are returned to the general logistics system at the end of the trade fair. We also employ system fair stand material that can be reused indefinitely. If new material is purchased then value is placed on durability and multiple use of the materials.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY:
Environmentally friendly energy technology is very important to us and we have carried out a variety of measures that allow us to save and effectively use energy. Our roofs are equipped with state-of-the-art photovoltaic systems. Building insulation and retrofitting to CHPs are further examples.
DIGITAL OFFICE:
We try to reduce paper consumption wherever we can and reply on sending digitally… and if that is not possible then we choose "eco-friendly mail.
The eco-friendly Deutsche Post "GoGreen" service is used for all office mailings.
GREEN TRAVEL:
Our exhibition centre is excellently connected to the Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) and VRR public transportation. In the direct vicinity, there are tram stations and one rail station (Dortmund - Signal Iduna Park), there is a Metropolrad Ruhr station (bicycles to hire) and RWE charging stations for electric vehicles.

SUSTAINABLE FAIR GROUNDS:
Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe GmbH takes a holistic approach to sustainability and has committed itself to the Sustainability Code of the German-speaking Events Industry. By signing the code and receiving the seal "fairpflichtet", the company supports 10 guidelines for sustainable actions.
These include: sustainable management and resulting sustainable actions, responsibility toward the region and society, conscious use of resources and energy, and commitment to opposing discrimination or corruption in any form.

By the way, you can also lodge sustainably on our fair grounds. The Mercure Hotel Dortmund Messe & Kongress Westfalenhallen is a certified "Green Hotel" in accordance with the criteria of the German travel management association VDR. In addition, our hotel participates in Planet 21 and promotes sustainable hospitality.
